Saratoga Surrender Site Project Update

February 26, 2019

The Friends of Saratoga Battlefield have nearly completed the fund raising phase of the Saratoga Surrender Site project located in Schuylerville, NY. The building of a memorial park on the exact location where British General Burgoyne surrendered to American General Gates on October 17, 1777 will honor America’s first veterans and the general officers who led them to victory.

The project’s first phase included the property’s purchase, construction/engineering planning, all legal requirements, archaeology plan and study, site management agreement between the three not-for-profit partners and the manufacture/purchase of a large bronze bas relief of the image of General Burgoyne turning over his sword in surrender. This project phase is funded and complete.

The next project phase is actual site construction and will be managed by members of the Historic Hudson – Hoosick River Partnership.  This phase includes site earth work, installation of memorial walls, driveway, walkways, kiosks, donor recognition and American Generals’ memorial. At this time we have appropriate funding to begin construction this spring and anticipate a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 17, 2019. We have received fantastic community and business support with 130 donors in 2018 alone. To date we have received over $500,000 toward the construction phase of the Saratoga Surrender Site.

The final phase of the project will include landscaping (trees, shrubs, and wildflowers), additional interpretive signage, period fencing, cannon carriages and picnic tables. We are currently seeking donations for these items. Any amount would be greatly appreciated to help us finish this very important historic memorial park.
